The Easter holidays are just around the corner and with great events, lots to do for family fun and (fingers crossed) fabulous weather, the Algarve is the PERFECT place to spend them!
This year Easter Sunday is April 16th 2017 and the Algarve celebrates “Páscoa” with the famous “Flower Torches Festival” in São Brás de Alportel and the “Festa Pequena” (Small Feast) of the “Festa da Mãe Soberana” (Feast of the Sovereign Mother) in Loulé.
Other not-to-be-missed Easter Algarve events include the “Triumphal Procession” on Palm Sunday (the Sunday before Easter Sunday) in Tavira and “Folar” cake fairs (“Folares da Páscoa”) across the region, where everyone tucks into traditional bread, often made with hard-boiled eggs inside (some even with the shell still!)
“Pastelarias” (cake shops) and markets are stocked up with "Folares" too, as are the supermarkets, along with sugared almonds and chocolate eggs. Local Portuguese restaurants also have specials for traditional Easter dishes, such as roast lamb (“Borrego assado no forno”), goat (“Cabrito assado no forno”) and savoury Folar and in general, it's just wining and dining across the Algarve to toast to family and holiday time.
There are loads of things to do in the Algarve at Easter, from boat trips, jeep safaris, Segway and bike tours, to kayaking, surfing, fishing and parasailing. Albufeira's Zoomarine theme park is open, as is Zoo Lagos, both making a great day out for all the family!
No trip to the Algarve at Easter would be complete without a bit of beach time and if it carries on like it has been so far for 2017, then it will be swimwear all the way! On the sunny days, temperatures can reach ~30°C in April and despite the chance of rain, it still stays mild and there’s more chance of summer gear than a rain coat!
